I recently went to observe a potential new client who had a puppy under one year old who’s barking was becoming a big problem for the family. I was informed of previous procedures and two different types of antidepressants she was on. Before I go further keep in mind the home was beautiful but had no backyard for the puppy to run and get her much needed daily exercise which is extremely important for mental and physical developments. Upon review of a video sent by the owners I saw that the dog was barking but only because she needed some attention and she needed to be “WORKED” meaning she is craving direction and needs a job to do; lack of training will always come back later on when at that point your puppy is bigger and stronger so stay constant with daily routines and exercise! The other thing I noticed is that the dog was loopy and clumsy which can indicate over medicating which can cause a dog to go a little crazy . I believe their are cases in which a dog is extremely stressed and suffers from separation anxiety and do need to be medicated but this puppy didn’t fit that criteria. The owners did admit they thought the medication would distinguish the barking. When you put a dog on medication just because you don’t want it to bark is not the right approach. The barking may be dulled down but the emotion a dog feels is still strong‼️
